MARSHALL -- Veterans who served between November 11, 1990 and October 1, 2013 may be eligible for enhanced benefits through the PACT Act.   Key components of the PACT Act include:   Expanding and extending eligibility for VA health care for veterans with toxic exposures and veterans of the Vietnam era, Gulf War era, and Post-9/11 era.  Ensures every enrolled veteran will receive an initial toxic exposure screening and a follow-up screening every five years.   Requires VA research on the morality of veterans who served in Southwest Asia during the Gulf War; Post-9/11 veteran health trends; and veteran cancer rates.  [...]

Man from Morton Sentenced for Assault in the Second Degree

RENVILLE COUNTY -- Richard Leo Peters, 56 years old, of Morton, was sentenced for the crime of Assault in the Second Degree (assault with a dangerous weapon) on Monday, August 1, 2023. On July 31, 2022, Deputy Hussman from the Renville County Sheriff’s Office responded to Peters’ residence after being informed that he may be having a possible diabetic-based medical episode. Marshall Fire Department Responds to Two Overnight Fires

MARSHALL – The Marshall Fire Departments responded to back-to-back fire calls last night. The first fire was reported by a passerby around 10:30 p.m. at the 1100 block of Horizon Drive. One occupant was in the house at the time. The Marshall Police Department was able to get the occupant out safely.   When MFD arrived, they found the front of the house had an exterior fire and the fire had worked its way towards the interior of the home. Plane Crashes into Cornfield North of Tyler; Nobody Hurt

TYLER – Nobody was injured when a plane crashed Friday morning, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 11:07 Friday morning, a single seat spray plane was attempting to take flight when it crashed into a cornfield, just north of the Tyler Municipal Airport runway. The pilot, who has not been identified, was not injured. The plane was damaged in the crash. The public is asked to stay away from the area for safety reasons and so the crash scene can be properly investigated. Vehicle/Deer Collision on Hwy. 23; Granite Falls Woman Injured

GREEN VALLEY – A Granite Falls woman was hospitalized after her vehicle struck a deer, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. At approximately 9:45 Sunday evening, a 2016 Kia Optima was traveling northbound on Highway 23 near Green Valley in Lyon County when it struck a deer. The driver of the Kia, 18-year-old Tianna Marie Wright of Granite Falls, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Granite Falls hospital. Assistance was provided by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Cottonwood Ambulance.

Heat wave to hit the Midwest this week

MARSHALL – Temps are expected to hit the mid to upper 90s this week. The phrase, “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” will ring true once again with dew points forecasted in the 60s and 70s. The southern half of the state will really start to heat up on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and heat indices in the triple digits. Those muggy conditions will continue into Thursday and Friday, while the northern half of the state is expecting temps to hit the upper 80s and lower 90s.  

Pedestrian struck by car on Hwy. 71 in Jackson

JACKSON – A Jackson man was injured after being struck by a car, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. At approximately 10:50 Saturday evening, a 2013 Buick Enclave was traveling southbound on Highway 71 in Jackson when it struck a pedestrian near Industrial Parkway.  The pedestrian, 29-year-old Raymond Arthur Guisinger of Jackson, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Jackson Medical Center. The driver of the Buick, 58-year-old Patricia Mae Pierson of Arnolds Park, IA, was not injured.  Assistance was provided by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Fire and Ambulance. 

Woman arrested after brandishing handgun in Vesta, crashing into multiple cars, and leading deputies on 20-mile pursuit

VESTA – A woman has been arrested after brandishing a firearm in rural Vesta and leading the police on a 20-mile pursuit early Friday morning, according to the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 3:04 Friday morning, dispatch received a report of an intoxicated woman chasing a man through a yard with a handgun. Before deputies arrived, the suspect got into a vehicle and began crashing it into other vehicles on the property.   When deputies from the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office arrived, the suspect fled the scene.
