John Lewis Loe was born on June 23, 1939, on the family farm outside of Cottonwood to Edwin and Hazel (Cole) Loe. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in the Christian faith. He graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1957, attended St. Olaf College, and then served in the National Guard from 1961-1967. On December 31, 1966, he was united in marriage to Kathy Nikolaisen at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in rural Cottonwood.  John and Kathy raised their family on a farm in rural Hanley Falls where they farmed with his brother, Harold, and his wife, Ellen, for many years until retirement.
