WORTHINGTON (KMHL) – Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. House Ag Committee Chairman Rep. Collin Peterson said they are working to get the JBS USA plant in Worthington open and running again.

During a press conference in Worthington this afternoon, Peterson called it a matter of national security.

“We’re about three weeks away from not having pork on the shelves of the grocery stores,” said Peterson. “Maybe that will wake people up. This is a bigger issue than whether we’re going to go hungry or not.”

Peterson added that if the United States doesn’t have a consistent and reliable food supply, he worries that people could riot.

Walz adds the plant needs to be re-opened. But the governor adds that it only make sense to re-open it when it is safe for the employees.
