Marshall Man Injured; Vehicle Struck Stop Sign, Power Line Support, and Fence

BALATON, MN (KMHL) -- One Man was injured after he lost control of his vehicle in Balaton. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, at approximately 3:56 Saturday afternoon, a 2004 Chevy Silverado was traveling northeast on 2nd Street in Balaton when it struck a stop sign, then a power line support, before crashing into a fence. The driver of the Silverado, 24-year-old Tyler Sowden of Marshall received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Marshall Hospital. Alcohol is believed to be involved in the crash. Assistance was provided by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. 

Suspected Human Remains Found in Burned-Up Vehicle Near Bird Island

BIRD ISLAND, MN (KMHL) -- The Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a report Sunday afternoon of a burned-up vehicle located in a drainage ditch about a mile west of Bird Island. When law enforcement officials arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Officials were able to identify suspected human remains in the vehicle. The suspected human remains will be sent to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for identification, and determination of the cause and manner of death. Visitation for Philip Schmidt, 91, of Wood Lake, will take place from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo, Minnesota.  A private family interment will take place at a later date. Philip Ervin Schmidt was born on February 7, 1931, in Posen Township, Yellow Medicine County, to Philip and Amalie (Frank) Schmidt.  He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Wood Lake.  On May 24, 1952, he was united in marriage to Muriel Grannes in Belview.  Philip was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany.  After his [...]
