Visitation for Philip Schmidt, 91, of Wood Lake, will take place from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo, Minnesota. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Philip Ervin Schmidt was born on February 7, 1931, in Posen Township, Yellow Medicine County, to Philip and Amalie (Frank) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Wood Lake. On May 24, 1952, he was united in marriage to Muriel Grannes in Belview. Philip was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Southwest Minnesota. He and Muriel farmed and raised their family in Posen Township near Wood Lake. He was a dairy, hog and grain farmer. He also did custom corn shelling and shelled 100,000 bushels per year. He was also a part-time bus driver. Philip had many interests. He enjoyed the outdoors including hunting and fishing with his nephews and friends including special trips to Canada. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and belonged to the “Sno-Ryders” in Wood Lake. Philip was known as “Patchwork” to his many friends on the CB Radio. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially Whist.
Philip died on Monday, October 3, 2022, at the Prairie Home Hospice McLaughlin House in Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Muriel, of Wood Lake; children Mari Jo (Jim) Babcock of Marshall, John (Diane) Schmidt of Wood Lake, Amy (Joshua) Reyes of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Zachery (Jesemini) Reyes and Jayden Reyes of Sioux Falls; siblings Ordean (and Bonnie) Schmidt of Glenwood, Edgar Schmidt of Minneapolis, Joann Willhite of Hastings and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Curtis and siblings Arnold, Hilda, Arthur, Martin, LeRoy, Olena, Loren and Vernon.
