GRANITE FALLS — A police officer was injured in an exchange of gunfire during a knock and announce search warrant, and a suspect was taken into custody after a standoff that lasted more than an hour, according to the Granite Falls Police Department. A knock and announce search warrant was executed at approximately 4:00 Monday afternoon at a residence on Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls. Officers from the Cooperative Enforcement Effort (CEE) VI Drug and Gang Task Force, Granite Falls Police Department, Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Upper Sioux Community Police Department were attempting to locate a suspect that was wanted for multiple felony warrants on weapon and drug charges.
Upon entry into the residence, officers immediately took gunfire from somebody inside the home. Officers returned fire and then retreated outside after an officer said he had been struck by a bullet. The wounded officer was transported to the Granite Falls Hospital while other officers secured the perimeter. After a standoff that lasted around 70 minutes, the suspect surrendered into police custody without further incident.
The suspect is currently being held in the Yellow Medicine County Jail pending charges.
The wounded officer was treated and released from the Granite Falls Hospital. The investigation is ongoing and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be investigating the use-of-force incident.
