DPS doesn’t believe tanker truck driver intended to run over protesters

ST. PAUL (LEARFIELD) -- Investigators say there's no indication it was intentional when a tanker-truck drove into a group of protesters on the I-35W bridge Sunday afternoon. Authorities call it a miracle there are no reported injuries.  Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington says the driver -- a 35-year-old man from Otsego (ott-SEE-go) -- was speeding, saw the crowd and panicked. Harrington says he saw a young woman on a bike fall down in front of him and he slammed on the brakes, and he slid for a certain period of time until the vehicle stopped.

Marshall Area YMCA ready to reopen facility

MARSHALL (KMHL) – As bars and restaurants have begun re-opening from shutdowns related to COVID-19 – there still is no timeline on the re-opening of fitness centers in Minnesota. Those businesses were ordered closed on March 17th and they have been closed for nearly three months. Demonstration in Sioux Falls turns violent Sunday night

SIOUX FALLS (KMHL) – The city of Sioux Falls issued a Declaration of Emergency and a curfew last night as a protest and march that moved down Minnesota Avenue came to an end at the Empire Mall and began to turn violent last night. Some of the protesters began throwing rocks at officers. Authorities say they also heard 15-20 gunshots near the mall. Police used flash bang grenades and tear gas to disperse the protest. Sioux Falls mayor Paul TenHaken said the group was between 700 and 1200 – he said there were no serious injuries reported.

COVID-19 case rate dips, as Lyon County sees local uptick

ST. PAUL (LEARFIELD/KMHL) -- Over the last week the case positive rate for COVID-19 has continued to trend down. The Minnesota Department of Health and state leaders say they keep a close eye on the percentage of COVID-19 tests delivered that come positive to watch for any spikes in case numbers. There was a slight uptick in cases in Lyon County – health officials say there were 13 confirmed new virus cases reported over the weekend locally. In Lyon County there have now been 56 confirmed cases of the virus.

Walz appoints Attorney General Ellison to lead prosecution in George Floyd case

ST. PAUL (KMHL) – Gov. Tim Walz announced last night that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will lead the prosecution in the George Floyd case. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman filed the charges against Derek Chauvin Friday – the investigation into the three others continues. Walz said protesters don’t trust the process – so he said Ellison needs to lead the prosecution. Ellison told reporters Sunday that he plans to bring all resources necessary to bring justice in the case.

Hutchinson woman taken into custody after high-speed chase

OLIVIA (KMHL) – A Hutchinson woman was arrested and booked in Renville County during a high-speed chase. According to the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, authorities attempted to stop the woman after getting her on radar driving at more than 100 mph. Sheriff’s officials say the woman refused to stop, so they were led on a high-speed chase. They eventually were able to get the vehicle stopped south of Olivia after deploying stop sticks. Authorities say she was booked on a charge of fleeing a police officer.
