MARSHALL — Domestic violence affects not only individuals but entire communities, and this October, local efforts are underway to raise awareness and support survivors. WoMen’s Rural Advocacy Programs (WRAP) is organizing events to highlight the issue, including its fifth annual Bids Against Abuse fundraiser.
Bids Against Abuse kicked off on Oct. 10 with an online auction featuring around 95 items, which will conclude at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. A live event will also take place at the Marshall Golf Club from 5-8 p.m., including a short program. This year’s event has expanded with more auction items and table sponsors, with proceeds benefiting survivors of violence, sexual violence, and sex trafficking in the area.
In addition to fundraising, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with memorial displays across the region honoring victims. A display of 40 purple ribbons, representing individuals killed by domestic violence in 2023, is currently at the Lyon County Government Center in Marshall. Other displays will be held in Granite Falls and Ivanhoe later this month. Purple lights will also shine at the Lower Sioux Community cultural incubator and bridge throughout October.
