The funeral service for Velarie “Vel” Mayer, 82, of Marshall, formerly of Hutchinson, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the remembrance center. Interment will be at 4:00 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Dimock, SD.
Velarie “Vel” Adele (Srb) Mayer was born December 22, 1938, in Murdo, SD, the daughter of Joseph and Frieda (Huber) Srb. Vel was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Kadoka, SD. She lived near Belvidere, SD, until moving with her parents to Kadoka, SD, in 1947. Vel graduated from high school in 1957, then furthered her education at Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls, SD. On January 30, 1965, she was united in marriage to Vilas “Vi” Mayer in Sioux Falls. To this marriage, two sons were born: Steven and Kevin. Vel and Vi resided in Mitchell, SD, Cherokee, IA, and Marshall, MN, before moving to Hutchinson, MN in 1994. The couple shared 39 years of marriage until Vi’s death in 2004. Vel had many jobs throughout her life, working for Banker’s Life Insurance of Des Moines in Sioux Falls from 1959-1965. She was a stay-at-home mom during her son’s preschool years. She later worked in various business offices, jewelry and clothing retail in South Dakota and Iowa. Vel also worked in banking in Marshall and Hutchinson. Vel enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and baking. She loved music of all kinds, including singing in choir. Vel especially treasured time spent with her husband Vi and sons Steven and Kevin and their families, as well as other relatives and friends. Vel volunteered at school, church, LWML Guild, GFWC Hutchinson’s Women’s Club, and other civic organizations, many of which she was a long-time member. She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and a long-time member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, MN. Vel moved to Marshall in 2018 to be closer to family.
Vel died on Friday, October 8, 2021, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.
She is survived by her sons Steven (Dawna) and Kevin (Lori); grandchildren Maxwell, Jaxon, Jerad (Mikayla), Karlie (Brett), Nash, and Mariah; great-grandchildren Easton, Addison, and Lenni; sister Elaine Latta; brother Laren Srb; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Frieda Srb, husband Vilas, aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters- and brothers-in-law Lumena and Pete Schoenfelder, Marie and Henry Schumacher, and Don Latta.
