GERMANTOWN TWP, MN — Five people were killed and several others injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Germantown Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 4:42 p.m. March 20 near the intersection of Highway 71 and 240th Street, between Sanborn and Windom. Authorities say a 2016 GMC Terrain traveling northbound on Highway 71 collided head-on with a southbound 2019 Ford Transit van.
The driver of the SUV, 67-year-old Martin Nickolas Hanson of Springfield, was killed in the crash.
Four passengers in the van also died: 49-year-old Kelly Christine Hargus, 73-year-old Kathleen Ann Johnson, 73-year-old Richard Warren Johnson, all of Jackson, and 47-year-old Lindsey Kay Rossow of Lakefield.
The van driver, 42-year-old Matthew Arthur Schultz of Lakefield, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Windom Hospital.
Several passengers were injured. 44-year-old Kassandra Lynn Ambrose of Jackson, and 54-year-old Eric Charles Rossow of Lakefield, sustained life-threatening injuries, with Rossow flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Others suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospitals in Windom and Redwood Falls.
Road conditions were reported as dry and alcohol was not suspected in the crash.
Multiple agencies responded, including Cottonwood and Redwood County sheriff’s offices, Sanborn Fire Department, Ambulance service from Windom, Lamberton, Westbrook, and Springfield, and North Air Care.
