The 75th Emmys went down last night, and host Anthony Anderson recruited his MAMA Doris to cut people off when their acceptance speeches went too long.
(Here’s Anthony’s monologue. Skip to 5:21 for the Mama stuff.)
Seriously. Doris was sitting in the audience, near the front, and when people went too long, she stood up and told them to wrap it up. Jennifer Coolidge was the first winner to face her wrath.
As funny as the bit was, Jon Oliver made it even better. When his show “Last Week Tonight” won the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, he thanked all the appropriate people.
But then he said, quote, “I am not leaving without getting played off by Anthony Anderson’s mom.” Then he proceeded to start naming the players on the Liverpool soccer team just so he could go over his time.
Another one of the show’s highlights was Christina Applegate coming out to present an award . . . and getting a much-deserved standing ovation. Then she jokingly scolded the crowd for SHAMING her and her MS by standing up.
The show also featured cast reunions from several shows, including “Cheers”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Martin”, “The Sopranos”, “All in the Family”, and “Ally McBeal”.
Elton John wasn’t at the ceremony, but he completed his EGOT when his concert special “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” won the award for Outstanding Variety Special.
The night’s big winners were “Succession” and “The Bear”, with six wins each, and the limited series “Beef”, with five.
