MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University alumnus Isiah Whitlock Jr., Class of 1976, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, in New York City after a brief illness. He was 71. 

Whitlock was born Sept. 13, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana. He attended SMSU on a football scholarship before injuries ended his athletic career and led him to the university’s theatre program, launching a path that became a decades-long acting career. 

He made his television debut with a guest role on Cagney and Lacey in 1987 and went on to appear in numerous films and television series. His credits include GoodfellasEnchanted, and multiple collaborations with Spike Lee, beginning with 25th Hour in 2002 and most recently Da 5 Bloods. He also held recurring roles on Veep and Your Honor. 

Whitlock was best known for portraying Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s The Wire. His most recent role was in early 2025 as Police Chief Larry Dokes in the Netflix mini-series The Residence. 

He received the SMSU Alumni Achievement Award in 2004 and established the Whitlock Endowment with the SMSU Foundation in 2016. Whitlock frequently returned to campus to work with theatre students and visited Marshall in April 2025 for an alumni reunion hosted by the SMSU Theatre Program.
