MARSHALL — As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, today’s focus is on floods — one of the deadliest and most costly natural disasters in the United States.
Nationwide, floods claim nearly 200 lives annually, displace around 300,000 people, and cause over $2 billion in property damage. In Minnesota alone, six of the nine state and federally-declared disasters in 2019 involved flooding.
Flash floods, often triggered by heavy spring and summer rains, can develop within hours. About 75% of flash flood deaths occur at night, and nearly half of all victims perish in vehicles — many after attempting to drive through barricaded or flooded roads.
Officials urge the public to prepare ahead of time:
-
Assemble a three-day emergency supply kit.
-
Create and share a family emergency plan.
-
Stay informed through NOAA Weather Radio.
-
Take preventive steps at home, such as elevating appliances and installing check valves.
-
Consider purchasing flood insurance, as standard policies often exclude flood damage.
Driving in flood conditions can be particularly dangerous. Six inches of water can stall or disable a car, while two feet can sweep away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickups. Authorities emphasize: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
