SAINT PAUL — A bill that would provide a property tax exemption for American Legion halls and VFW posts received a hearing in front of a Minnesota House panel. Supporters say the measure is critical to keeping these community hubs open.
Minnesota American Legion Department Commander Carl Moon emphasized the role these halls play beyond just social gathering spaces.
“We prop up small local nonprofits, providing important community services, including youth sports, addressing food insecurities and homelessness, and funding public safety equipment. These are important gaps filled that the federal, state, and local governments cannot address,” said Moon.
With many American Legion halls already closed or struggling, Moon warned of the impact if the bill does not pass.
“The American Legion Department of Minnesota has a total of 531 posts, but more than half of these already do not have buildings. 260 of our posts do have buildings. Of those, several are struggling and are at risk of closing,” he noted.
Alan Skramstad, adjutant of Post 201 in Mora, also voiced concerns about the future of these historic institutions.
“Our post is an original post organized in 1919 when the American Legion began. We have a storied history of supporting veterans and helping in our community. I hope your support to get this bill passed to help posts like ours survive, because without it we won’t,” said Skramstad.
The bill, authored by Republican Representative Peggy Bennett of Albert Lea, now heads to the House Taxes Committee for further consideration.
