Marshall, Minn. — Marshall City Administrator Sharon Hanson has been named the 2026 recipient of the Dr. Robert A. Barrett Award for Management Excellence, the top honor presented by the Minnesota City/County Management Association.
The award recognizes exceptional service and leadership in local government management. Hanson, who has led the city for the past eight years, was selected for her track record of guiding major projects, strengthening community connections, and advancing the profession.
Among her most notable accomplishments is her leadership on the Marshall Aquatic Park project. She played a central role in securing legislative approval for a local sales tax, helping pass a public referendum, and overseeing the project from planning through construction.
Hanson’s work also includes leading union negotiations, managing sensitive community issues, expanding grant opportunities, and coordinating recovery efforts following severe weather events. She has also supported economic development initiatives and worked closely with local leaders and residents.
Known for her accessibility and communication, Hanson launched a Citizens Academy program aimed at improving transparency in local government. She also teaches at Southwest Minnesota State University and contributes to local media.
In addition to her work in Marshall, Hanson has focused on mentoring future public sector leaders, including overseeing internship programs and supporting professional organizations. She currently serves on boards for the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities and the League of Minnesota Cities.
Before coming to Marshall, Hanson served as Pipestone County Administrator, where she was recognized with the Joe Ries Excellence in County Management Award.
The Barrett Award is given annually to a local government leader who demonstrates excellence, professionalism, and a commitment to advancing the field.
