COTTONWOOD — A Cottonwood man and his dog were rescued on Monday after his vehicle went through the ice on Cottonwood Lake, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 9:18 AM Monday morning, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle breaking through the ice on Cottonwood Lake in Cottonwood. Emergency responders, including Lyon County deputies, the Cottonwood Fire Department, and Cottonwood Ambulance, responded to the incident.
The vehicle’s occupants, a 68-year-old Cottonwood man and a small dog, were rescued with the help of a local resident and members of the Cottonwood Fire Department. The man was pulled from the water and transported to Avera Marshall Hospital for treatment, while the dog was taken to Lakeside Companion Animal Clinic for care.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the community members who assisted in the rescue and reminded residents that ice conditions can be unpredictable, even during extreme cold.
