Mass of Christian burial for Loretta Kern, 97, of Minneota will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota beginning at 10:00 a.m. Public visitation will take place from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Minneota. A rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. at St. Edward. Burial will take place at St. Edward cemetery following the funeral mass. Upon conclusion of the graveside service a luncheon will be held at church. Loretta passed away at Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby on Monday, June 3, 2024. The Horvath Funeral Service in Minneota is handling the arrangements.
Loretta Elizabeth (Schiller) Kern was born on October 5, 1926, to Joseph and Mary (Lantgen) Schiller in Kranzburg, SD. She spent her early years in Kranzburg until moving to Minneota in 1932. She received first communion and was confirmed at St. Edward Church. She attended school in Minneota and graduated from Minneota High School. She met and fell in love with Milo Kern. The couple was married at St. Edward Church on June 10, 1946. Together they have five children. They raised their family on various farms in rural Minneota. Loretta had a number of different jobs throughout her lifetime. Some of her favorite jobs include working at the Canby Sale Barn and Porter Sale Barn, as well as a 14-year tenure at the Minneota Manor. She was an active member in the CCW, Joan of Arc, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary. She had many hobbies and interests throughout her life. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, completing word searches, embroidering, square dancing with her husband Milo, and gardening. Loretta and Milo loved to travel. The couple took many vacations and bus trips together. A highlight of their travels was a trip to England to visit her brother.
Loretta passed away at Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby on Monday, June 3, 2024.
She is survived by her children Barbara (Ron) Stangeland of Brookings, SD, Michael (Jean) Kern of Dayton, MN, Dennis (Sherry) Kern of Porter, MN, Lynell (Steve) Sunderland of Montevideo, MN, Lorraine (Dennis) Meulebroeck of Balaton, MN; 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Loretta is preceded in death by her husband Milo; parents Joseph and Mary Schiller; siblings Vernon Schiller, Donna Pirilia, Marvin Schiller, Donald Schiller, and Leona Hentges.
