Dorothy B. Riekens, age 90, of Canby, MN passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, MN with Rev. Levi Bollerud officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Gary, South Dakota.
Dorothy Bertha Riekens was born May 27, 1931 to Paul and Minne (Arp) Riekens in Gary, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary. She attended country school until March of 7th grade and then went to Gary Public School, graduating in 1949. Following her education, she worked at Heaton’s Grocery store for two years and then moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1951. Dorothy worked at Economy Market as a bookkeeper and cashier for 12 years before going to work at Daniels Olsen Building Products for 31 years. After retirement, she worked for Sertoma Bingo for five years. In 2017, she moved to Canby and lived at the Sara Ann Apartments. In December of 2019, she moved to the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby. Dorothy passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 90. She was a member of First Lutheran Church while living in Sioux Falls and a current member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby where she served in the WELCA and attended bible study. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, bingo, reading, movies, bowling and traveling.
She is survived by her sister Lois Cole, Canby, MN; nephews: Jim Helgemo, Steve Helgemo, and John Cole; nieces: Diane Helgemo and Susan Schanning; and several great nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Minnie Riekens; sister, Betty Helgemo; brothers-in-law: David Cole and Elmer Helgemo; and one niece Denise Helgemo.
