SMSU, Area Communities Receive Funding in State Bonding Bill

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University and several southwest Minnesota communities are set to receive funding through Minnesota’s newly approved $1.2 billion bonding bill. SMSU was awarded $1.2 million for facilities projects involving locker rooms, the gymnasium and the university’s athletics dome structure. University officials said the funding will support long-needed updates to athletic facilities. The bonding bill also includes infrastructure funding for several area communities. Ghent will receive $3 million for water infrastructure improvements, while Russell was awarded $1 million for the next phase of its water and sewer system upgrades. WALNUT GROVE — Students at Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary are celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with patriotic projects, activities and a community parade this week.  On Thursday, kindergarten through sixth grade students will march in a 250th anniversary parade starting at 2 p.m. at the elementary school and traveling down Main Street in Walnut Grove. ICE Agent Charged in Connection with January Shooting in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS — The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has charged an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in connection with the January shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis in north Minneapolis.  According to prosecutors, ICE agent Christian Castro, 52, faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime stemming from the Jan. 14 incident.  The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office alleged Castro fired his weapon through the front door of a home after several people ran inside. Wabasso Man in Critical Condition Following Motorcycle Crash in Murray County

LAKE WILSON, Minn. — A Wabasso man is in critical condition after a motorcycle crash on Saturday in Murray County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, at 4:47 Saturday afternoon, a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound on State Highway 91 in Cameron Township, north of Lake Wilson, when the driver lost control and crashed.  The driver of the motorcycle, 46-year-old Burnard Lee Jr. Ours of Wabasso, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Murray County Hospital. Lyon County Museum Launches Online “Find Your Veteran” Database to Preserve Local Military Stories

The Lyon County Historical Society has launched a new online database dedicated to Lyon County veterans. Called “Find Your Veteran,” the searchable database is available through the museum’s website. Developed by Creature Works, the platform is designed to preserve and share the stories of  veterans and their military service. Users can search the database by veteran name, service branch, military era, or community. More than 1,100 Lyon County veterans are currently included in the database. Morton Man Charged with Felony for Failing to Update Offender Registration, Whereabouts Unknown

Redwood County, Minn. — A Morton man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he failed to comply with predatory offender registration requirements. According to a criminal complaint, 35-year-old Dylan Andrew Karns is accused of not updating his registration and abandoning his listed address. Karns is required to register due to a prior criminal sexual conduct adjudication. The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office conducted a compliance check on March 27 at a residence along the 40100 block of Dakota Trail in Morton.
