CHAMPLIN, Minn. — Governor Tim Walz has signed the so-called “Grandparent’s Happy Hour” provision into law, allowing nursing homes and assisted living facilities to serve alcohol to residents and their guests without obtaining a liquor license. The measure was one of the more widely supported bills approved during the 2026 legislative session.

Resident Anita LeBrun welcomed the change.

“The law gives us the freedom to make more choices about our social activities. It affirms that living in assisted living doesn’t mean giving up everyday pleasures or independence. Personally I’m excited now that I can enjoy a glass of Pinot Grigio with friends.”

Walz said he hopes lawmakers continue passing legislation that improves quality of life for Minnesotans.

“It may not be as serious as a budget you might think about, but I think Anita brought it up. I do think it is serious about personal freedoms. I think it opens up the door for us to think about are there other areas that the same thing can happen.”

The provision passed with broad bipartisan support as part of the omnibus liquor bill.
