Steven “Steve” Nichols, age 73, of Tyler, Minnesota, died on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Hartquist Funeral Home – Tyler Chapel. Arrangements are under the care of Hartquist Funeral Home – Tyler Chapel.

Steve was born on November 26, 1952, in Pipestone, Minnesota, the son of Morris “Mike” and Charlotte (Koopman) Nichols. He graduated from Verdi High School in Verdi, Minnesota. Steve spent many years farming after high school, a lifelong passion that brought him great joy that shaped his love and connection to the land. He also spent many years raising hogs and as an implement dealer.  Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his family above all else and especially loved his role as “Poppy.” He was happiest on the water waterskiing, enjoying lake life, or spending time with his grandchildren. A dedicated sports fan, Steve loyally followed the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings.

He is survived by his wife, Stephany; his daughter, Shirley (Kodi); his sons, Nathan (Tennille) and Erik; grandchildren Alex (Lacey), Kaleb (Skylar) Tristan, Wyatt, Izabella, Sutton, and Zavier; great-grandchildren Miracle, Noah, Malachi, and Oliver; brothers Pat (Ann), Jim (Cami), Bob (Renae), Tom (Dana), and Kelly (Cindy); sister Shelly (Jerry); and many nieces and nephews.  Steve was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lake Benton Lake Association.
