Republican Party of Minnesota officials have launched an online petition drive, urging Democrats to abandon their push to replace the state flag and seal with new designs. Minnesota GOP Chairman David Hann says about the current flag, “I’m looking at the flag design right now. There’s nothing about that design that is racist. It’s got a picture of somebody plowing a field and it’s got a picture of somebody that apparently is a Native person riding a horse. It’s not racist.”

Some members of the special flag-and-seal commission strongly disagree.

Hann added, “This is just a complete waste of resources to spend time and money to change something that has been and is historically significant, which is the traditional Minnesota state flag.”

The new designs they selected become official in May unless the legislature intervenes.
