ST. PAUL (LEARFIELD) — More than 31 thousand people applied for unemployment benefits in Minnesota Wednesday.
The closing of hundreds of businesses due to the Coronavirus pandemic created the rush. State officials say on a normal week they process about 500 new applications per day.
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says it has received more than 72 thousand applications this week.
Officials expect that number to grow.
