SAINT PAUL, Minn. — In recognition of National Farm Safety and Health Week, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is encouraging farmers to apply for funding through two safety programs aimed at reducing risks on the farm.

The Grain Storage Facility Safety Grant helps farmers purchase equipment to improve on-farm grain bin and silo safety. “With the grain storage facility safety grant that helps purchase a variety of safety equipment such as fall protection systems, grain bin level alerts, spiral staircases and platforms, we even allow PPE like respirators and hearing protection,” said grant administrator Allison Beauregard.

The Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) Rebate Program assists farmers in retrofitting tractors built before 1987 with roll bars and seatbelts. “Agriculture is considered one of the most hazardous industries to work in, so the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is offering the rollover protective structure rebate program,” Beauregard said.

The grain storage program reimburses 75% of costs, up to $400 per bin or silo, with a $2,400 annual limit per farm. The ROPS program covers 70% of retrofitting costs, capped at a $500 out-of-pocket expense for farmers.

The MDA is accepting applications for both programs through June 30, 2027, or until funds run out.
