MARSHALL — The Marshall Police Department is intensifying its efforts to ensure student safety by increasing patrols and launching a renewed campaign focused on school zone speed enforcement. The move comes in response to a rise in community concerns over inattentive driving, speeding, and drivers disregarding school crossing guards.

“Recently, we have been informed of safety concerns for our children specifically in our school zones—distracted driving, speeding, and not following the directions of our crossing guards,” said Jim Marshall, Director of Public Safety. “Because of those concerns, we’ve increased our presence with the focus of holding violators accountable.”

Officers will maintain a stronger presence near local schools, monitoring driver behavior and issuing citations where necessary. In addition to enforcement, the department aims to educate the public on safe driving habits in school zones.

Marshall emphasized the shared responsibility of the community in keeping students safe. “Children need a safe way to get to and from school, and we need to work together to ensure that happens,” he said. “We’re partnering with the school district and doing everything we can to protect our kids.”

Drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits, remain alert for children crossing or exiting vehicles, avoid mobile phone use, and follow the instructions of crossing guards. According to Marshall, distracted driving remains one of the most common and dangerous issues officers encounter near schools.

“Children are some of the most vulnerable users of our roadways,” he added. “They’re walking, riding bikes, and just trying to get to school safely. Everyone needs to do their part.”
