MARSHALL — Fire Prevention Week, observed from October 6th to 12th, focuses on the importance of having working smoke alarms at home. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You,” highlights that functioning smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by half.

On Sunday, October 6th at 7:00 p.m., the Marshall Fire Department encourages residents to participate in Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H.), practicing two exit routes and identifying a safe meeting place. After completing the drill, participants are asked to turn on their outdoor lights to signal their participation, with firefighters patrolling the city to observe. The department hopes for 100% participation in this life-saving drill.

Residents are reminded to test smoke detectors monthly, change batteries twice a year, and replace smoke alarms every 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors every 5 years. The Marshall Fire Department also invites the community to their annual open house on Thursday, October 10th, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at 201 East Saratoga Street, featuring tours, demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.

The department, staffed by 41 firefighters and three hazardous materials technicians, conducts regular inspections and training to ensure readiness for emergencies.
