MARSHALL — Five candidates have entered the race for Marshall’s City Council this fall, ensuring a contested election in Ward 2.

Marshall City Clerk Steven Anderson confirmed that Derek Deutz and David Sturrock have filed to run for the Ward 2 council seat. Sturrock, a former council member, last served in 2018. Incumbents Mayor Bob Byrnes, Ward 1 council member Amanda Schroeder, and Ward 3 council member James Lozinski have also filed for re-election.

In the Marshall School Board race, two current members are seeking re-election. School board chairman Matt Coleman and member Anne Marie Vorbach, who was appointed this year to fill a vacancy, have filed their candidacies. However, with three seats open, one remains without a candidate.

The filing period for city council, township board, and school board positions across Minnesota closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Election details and candidate listings are available on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.

Several area school districts will hold board elections in November, including Marshall, Lakeview, Minneota, Lynd, Milroy, and Tracy Area School Districts. Lakeview has two candidates, Sean Brovold and Jay Meiners, for its school board; Suzie Rauch for Lynd; and Jay Fultz, Jeffrey S. Knott, and Nicole Swanson for Tracy.

Municipal races also see new contenders: Tracy McCloud for Balaton City Council, Susan Johnson for Mayor of Florence, Robin Perea and Diana Slyter for Florence City Council, Justin Guggisberg for Mayor of Lynd, Jerry Sodemann and Shantel L. Williams for Lynd City Council, Chris Swoboda for Minneota City Council, Hilary Buchert for Mayor of Russell, and Linda Escher for Russell City Council. Seth Schmidt has filed for one of three Tracy City Council seats.

Area residents will cast their votes in November.
