Margaret Mary (Lemahieu) Adam was born on May 3, 1925, in Vlamertinge, Belgium, to Julius and Maria (Vanlede) Lemahieu. Margaret grew up on a farm near Vlamertinge. In the midst of World War II, she fled with her family to France for a short time as the Germans moved through Belgium. Margaret returned to Belgium, where she married Maurice Adam on April 27, 1949. In May of 1949, the couple boarded a cargo ship to America. Margaret’s aunt and uncle sponsored their arrival to Marshall, where they lived for a time before beginning farming near Cottonwood. The couple moved their family around southwest Minnesota every few years until moving to Granite Falls in 1981.  Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an excellent cook who made sure no one ever left her home hungry. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. Margaret also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially while playing cards. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. Following Maurice’s death in 1998, Margaret moved to Marshall in 2006.
