WORTHINGTON — Time is running out to register for the University of Minnesota Extension Cover Crop Academy. Secure your spot by June 10 to join this innovative, hybrid course designed for those working with or interested in cover crops.

The Cover Crop Academy, tailored to Minnesota cropping systems, will explore both the challenges and opportunities of using cover crops in the state. Participants will engage in research trials to address unknowns about cover crops, enhancing their understanding and application in real-world scenarios.

The Academy begins with in-person sessions at Research and Outreach Centers in Waseca (June 18), Crookston (June 20), and Lamberton (June 27). Participants should choose the most convenient location. Following the kickoff, bi-monthly online webinars (~2 hours each) will look deeper into cover crop topics. The program will conclude in May 2025 with a final in-person session to review trial results.

Topics include:

  • Developing a cover crop plan
  • Weed management
  • Cover crop termination
  • Soil fertility considerations
  • Avoiding cash crop issues
  • Getting started with cover crops

Attendees will leave with expanded knowledge, practical tools for cover crop implementation, and a peer network of cover crop advisors. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available, mainly in soil and water, nutrient management, and pest management categories.

A nominal fee is required to participate, thanks to sponsorship from the Minnesota Natural Resources Conservation Service and General Mills. Register by June 10 at UMN Cover Crop Academy. Participation in the entire program is expected, and certificates of completion will be awarded at the final session.
