SAINT PAUL, MN — A Steele County court on Monday sentenced Jason Lee Horner to 18 years in prison for the May 2023 killing of his former girlfriend, Sabrina Schnoor, in Owatonna.
Horner received a total sentence of 216 months after a jury in November convicted him of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to court records, Horner and Schnoor met near Morehouse Park on May 29, 2023, before walking along railroad tracks near Interstate 35. While underneath a highway overpass, Horner shot Schnoor once at close range and fled the scene. Schnoor died from the gunshot wound. Horner was prohibited from possessing a firearm at the time.
The case was prosecuted by the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office following a referral from the Steele County Attorney’s Office. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Owatonna Police Department investigated the killing.
“Jason Horner’s crimes are shocking and appalling,” Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a statement, adding that the sentence ensures accountability for the harm caused.
