ST. PAUL, MN – In a significant stride towards supporting veterans, Governor Tim Walz officially dedicated the new Montevideo Veterans Home today, accompanied by veterans and community leaders. This facility is one of three new veterans homes opened this year by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA).
“Minnesota remains committed to our veterans. The opening of the Montevideo Veterans Home, the third this year, is a reflection of that commitment,” stated Governor Walz. “This is another step in the right direction as we continue our work and fulfill our duty to support veterans and end veteran homelessness.”
MDVA Commissioner Brad Lindsay highlighted the importance of this development: “MDVA is honored to recognize the major accomplishment of opening this crucially needed home in Montevideo. As our 285,000 Minnesota Veterans age, it is more important than ever that we can care for them in their final years.”
The Montevideo facility joins new veterans homes in Preston and Bemidji, making Minnesota the only state to build and open three veterans homes simultaneously. These homes will collectively provide skilled nursing care to nearly 200 additional veterans.
Plans for the Montevideo Veterans Home materialized after over a decade of advocacy and two years of construction, with the groundbreaking occurring in August 2021. The 72-bed facility, located at 2190 William Ave, features private baths in all residential units, divided into four “neighborhoods” of 18 residents each to avoid long hallways. The first residents moved in this January.
Eligible veterans and their spouses can apply for admission, provided they meet specific service, residency, and medical criteria. Assistance with the application process is available through County Veterans Service Officers, and inquiries can be directed to NewHomesAdmissions@state.mn.us.
