REDWOOD COUNTY — The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office responded to a serious crash late Saturday night after receiving an iPhone crash detection alert. 

Deputies arrived around 10:22 p.m. Oct. 18 to the area of U.S. Highway 71 near 170th Street, where they found a 2000 Honda Civic in a cornfield west of the highway. The vehicle had rolled over and sustained extensive damage. 

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Obed Isai Lopez Escoto of Redwood Falls, was treated at the scene and later airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale with serious, life-threatening injuries. Authorities said he is now in stable condition. 

Assistance was provided by the Minnesota State Patrol, Lamberton Ambulance, CentraCare Ambulance, Wanda Fire Department, and North Memorial Air Care.
