In 1950, Bernie joined the Tracy Fire Department for 26 years, where he held many titles over the years, such as Fire Chief, Fire Marshall, Fire Assistant Chief and a fire training officer.  Bernie worked at many places, while living in Tracy, such as the Tracy Bottling Company, Tracy Floral, owned fire extinguisher sales business for over 50 years, and later worked part-time at Wal-mart in Marshall.  Over the years he was also a member of the Wheels across the Prairie board, the Faith Lutheran and later Zion Lutheran Church, and the Tracy American Legion, where he was commander for three years.  As a very involved community member, Bernie loved to see the Tracy community grow, and enjoyed gardening at his home, and spending time with his family.
