MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) will commemorate Black History Month with a keynote presentation by alumnus Dr. Michael V. Walker on Thursday, February 27, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Lower Conference Center.

Dr. Walker, a 1998 SMSU graduate, serves as the Director of the Office of Black Student Achievement for Minneapolis Public Schools. As a K-12 educator and DEI scholar, his work focuses on addressing disparities affecting Black students in Minnesota and beyond, emphasizing youth development and academic success.

The event is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for students, faculty, and community members to engage in meaningful dialogue about equity in education.

Earlier this month, SMSU hosted The Brothers of Rondo Film on Wednesday, February 12, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Lower Conference Center. The film highlighted the impact of the I-94 construction on the Rondo Neighborhood of Minneapolis and the social justice activists who fought to save their community and way of life. A panel discussion followed the film, and light refreshments were provided.

Additionally, SMSU featured a Poetry Reading with Cassie J. Williams, an SMSU alumna, on Tuesday, February 18, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Whipple Art Gallery. Williams, a writer, educator, and advocate for social justice, uses poetry as a tool for connection and social change, sharing her voice on both local and national stages.

In addition to these events, SMSU is offering service opportunities through February 28, 2025. Volunteer projects include assisting at local food shelves through the United Community Action Partnership, supporting tax preparation clinics, helping at SMSU’s Mustang Market food pantry, and organizing materials at the Lyon County Historical Society Museum.
