COTTONWOOD, Minn. — A Wood Lake firefighter was killed and another person injured Friday evening when a fire truck overturned near Lakeview School during homecoming events. 

According to the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at 6:36 p.m. on September 26. The fire truck had been traveling north on 490th Street, about one-eighth mile north of 160th Avenue, when it tipped onto its side in the west ditch. 

43-year-old Patrick Steven Remiger of Wood Lake, was trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene. 

The driver, 37-year-old Andrew Vanhecke of Wood Lake, and a juvenile passenger, were first taken to Avera Marshall Hospital before being flown to Avera Sioux Falls by air ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown. 

The fire truck and its occupants had been in Cottonwood participating in Lakeview’s homecoming festivities. 

Responding agencies included the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Granite Falls and Cottonwood ambulances, Cottonwood Fire Department, Midwest Medical Examiner, Pulver’s Towing, and Hamilton Funeral Home.
