South Dakota business and community leaders are remembering billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, who died Saturday at the age of 90.
Sanford built his fortune through Sioux Falls-based First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard before becoming one of the state’s most influential philanthropists. His donations supported health care, education, research, children’s programs and community projects across South Dakota and beyond.
Governor Larry Rhoden called Sanford “the greatest philanthropist in South Dakota history,” while Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen credited him with helping create a strong culture of charitable giving throughout the state.
Sanford Health President and CEO Bill Gassen said Sanford’s generosity transformed patient care and medical research, allowing the health system to expand services and pursue innovative treatments. First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard leaders Miles Beacom and Dana Dykhouse also praised Sanford’s commitment to helping others and investing in South Dakota.
Tributes also came from Sioux Falls Mayor Christine Erickson, U.S. Senator Mike Rounds, the Great Plains Zoo, Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota, and other organizations, all highlighting Sanford’s lasting impact on health care, education and community development.
