Shirlene Rhae Schmahl was born on February 13, 1955, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Hans and Jessie (Rogers) Schmahl. Shirlene grew up in Lake Benton, Minnesota, where she was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her youth at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Shirlene attended Lake Benton School and graduated with the high school class of 1973. Shortly thereafter, she attended the Stewart School of Cosmetology in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from 1974 to 1976. Shirlene was united in marriage to Daniel Schwab on October 4, 1980, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake Benton. The couple made their home in Marshall and were blessed with 2 daughters: Stephanie and Melissa. Shirlene worked at the Distribution Center for Schwan’s for several years before switching to The Convenience Food Pant where she served as a receptionist. When her family began to grow, she took some time off to raise the girls and also did some babysitting on the side. As Shirlene’s girls entered school, she returned to work – starting as a school cook at Samuel Lutheran School. As the years went on Shirlene shifted into becoming the church and school secretary for both Samuel Lutheran School and Christ Lutheran Church in Marshall. Shirlene also held other jobs over the years including secretary for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Schwan’s Call Center, and also office staff for Camden State Park. In 2008, Shirlene retired to do daycare for her grandson, Caelen. Family and faith were the foundations of Shirlene’s life. She would always find time to connect with friends and family with phone calls. Her other enjoyments in life included sewing, quilting, reading, and watching movies – especially on the Hallmark channel.
