LYON COUNTY — With Halloween, the end of daylight saving time, and the fall hunting season all approaching, Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen is reminding residents to stay alert and safe in the coming days.

As children prepare to head out for trick-or-treating, Wallen encouraged families to practice caution and respect for others. “Be respectful of our neighbors and everyone’s property and be cautious walking down the streets,” he said. “When we come to intersections, make sure you stop, look both ways, and walk across the streets. Don’t cut across people’s yards.”

Wallen also suggested that parents make sure kids are visible after dark. “If you can, bring a flashlight or have some bright-colored clothing,” he said. “Glow sticks are popular ones, and I’ve seen some light-up Halloween candy pails, too.”

For adults celebrating the holiday, Wallen emphasized responsible choices. “It’s nice to go out and socialize, but we always have to be smart,” he said. “If you’re going to drive, don’t drink, or arrange for a ride.”

As daylight saving time ends this weekend, Wallen reminded drivers to stay alert to new visibility challenges. “You might be driving to work with the sun in your eyes and heading home in the dark,” he said. “There’s also an increase in deer movement during those times, so keep an eye out along the ditches.”

He also noted that farmers are wrapping up the harvest season but may still be out on the roads. “It’s been a very nice harvest season,” Wallen said. “Most of the crops are off, but there’s still a little tillage. Give them some space.”

Looking ahead to the fall hunting season, Wallen urged hunters to stay safe and courteous. “Be respectful of people’s property. Don’t trespass, and if your deer runs onto someone else’s land, ask for permission before going after it,” he said. “And remember, alcohol and hunting don’t mix.”

Wallen added that Camden State Park will be closed to general visitors during its upcoming mobility hunting event this weekend, which offers an accessible hunting opportunity for those with mobility challenges.
