Mass of Christian Burial for Robert “Bob” Aufenthie, 90, of Marshall, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall.   Visitation will be Friday, February 16, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a rosary at 5:00 and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall.   Visitation will continue Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow the luncheon with military rites at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall.  The Horvath Funeral Service in Marshall is handling the arrangements.

Bob was born on February 13, 1933 in Rochester, MN to Bernice and Alois Aufenthie. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. His early life was spent in Redwood Falls, graduating from Redwood Falls High School in 1951. He graduated from St. John’s University in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea serving in the United Nations Command Headquarters from 1956-58.  On August 2, 1958 he married Shirley Menk at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. After teaching and coaching at Morton High School he came to Marshall in 1960. He continued to coach and teach at Central Catholic High School for five years. In 1965 he started his thirty-year career with State Farm Insurance Companies in Marshall. God called his beloved wife Shirley in 1995. He also retired from State Farm that year.  On January 2, 2008 Bob married Ramona Nagel from Glencoe. Both enjoyed their travels to many parts of the world and had great respect for each other’s space.  Bob was active in the Marshall community over the years. He was active at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, a member of the Resurrection Choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister and past member of the parish council. He was a member of the board of directors on the SMSU Foundation for nearly 28 years. He volunteered with the “Meals On Wheels” program. He was most proud to serve on the first board of the YMCA, serving as its chairman the first six years. He organized the United Way of Marshall and he was a member of the Marshall Rotary club from 1965 – 2023.  He loved to go to St. John’s University to attend many functions, but mainly to watch the Johnnies play football. He had played on John Gagliardi’s first championship team in 1953. Since his retirement he has enjoyed doing volunteer work in Marshall.  Bob was an avid Vikings fan, he never missed a game. Camp Kawinogans held a special place in his heart and he often shared the camaraderie of a Canadian fishing trip with his friends and family.

Bob died on February 10, 2024 at Avera Morningside Heights in Marshall.

Bob was a good man. He is survived by his loving wife Ramona Nagel; children: Greg (Terry) Aufenthie of Mandan ND, Ann (Jim) Boegler of Marshall MN, Mike (Ellen) Aufenthie of St. Louis, MO, Charlie (Tanya) Aufenthie of Marshall, MN; grandchildren Christopher (Casie) Aufenthie of Mandan ND, Tyler Boegler (Michael Keichinger) LaCrosse WI, Mallory (Christian) Gonzales Tooelee UT, Karl Aufenthie of St. Louis MO, Zachary Aufenthie of Orlando FL, Spencer Aufenthie of Oklahoma City OK, Konnor Aufenthie of River Falls WI, Cecily Aufenthie of Marshall MN; great-grandchildren Piper and Willow Aufenthie of Mandan ND, Damian Gonzales of Tooelle UT; brother Tom Aufenthie of Portland OR.  He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley; parents Bernice and Alois; sister Mary.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Redeemer Foundations, Avera Foundation, YMCA or SMSU Foundation. Bob tried to follow the Benedictine Rule of Prayer and Work. He fought the good fight and finished the race. He kept the faith. He was fully aware that one of the most beautiful and frightening qualities of our eternity is the knowledge that we surely cooperated in creating it for ourselves.
