LYON COUNTY, Minn. — The Pochardt family has been selected as the Lyon County Farm Family of the Year, recognizing more than a century of farming in Lyon County.
The family’s farming roots date back to 1890. Over the years, the operation has included beef cattle, corn, soybeans and small grains. Dan and Kelly Pochardt took over the farm in 2016 and now operate a cow-calf and feedlot operation while raising crops and alfalfa.
In addition to the farm, the Pochardts operate Red Stable Reindeer, bringing reindeer to communities, schools and businesses during the Christmas season.
Dan and Kelly’s four children, Jasper, Avery, Maverick and Paisley, are actively involved on the farm, helping raise bottle calves, grow sweet corn, maintain a pumpkin patch and assist with the family’s reindeer business and farm events. The operation is also supported by Dan’s parents, Bruce and Crystal Pochardt, Dan’s uncle, Terry Pochardt, and employee Jesse Orvis.
The family is active in the community. Dan is involved with Zion Lutheran Church, the Southwest Cattlemen’s Association and the Lyon County Corn and Soybean Growers. Kelly teaches art at Lynd Public School, offers community art classes, serves as a Cub Scout den leader and volunteers with youth sports and other community activities. Their children participate in Cub Scouts, track, cross country, figure skating, basketball, volleyball, baseball, theater and piano.
