MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) will undergo a planned campus-wide power outage this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, 2025, to perform preventative maintenance on electrical switches and transformers.
Power will be shut off at 5:00 a.m. Saturday and is expected to be restored by 9:00 p.m. Sunday. While power may return sooner, campus officials advise planning for the full outage period. The outage will affect all academic, administrative, athletic, and residence hall buildings, except for the Foundation Apartments, which will remain powered.
To ensure safety, only electrical contractors and authorized staff will be permitted on campus during the outage. The campus will be closed to the public throughout the weekend.
Faculty and staff are asked to power off and unplug all electrical devices including computers, monitors, and refrigerators by Friday, May 16. Phones do not need to be unplugged. Refrigerators should be emptied to prevent food spoilage, and precautions should be taken in case of defrosting.
If weather delays the work, backup outage dates are scheduled for May 24-25. Questions can be directed to Tony Nubile, Director of Facilities, at 507-537-7328 or Tony.Nubile@smsu.edu.
