Paul H. Kvernmoe, age 74, of Astoria, SD, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 at his home after a long struggle with cancer. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Astoria, SD with Rev. Carlene Rhody officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Hendricks, MN is entrusted with the arrangements.
Paul Howard Kvernmoe was born at the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks, MN on July 29, 1948 to Howard and Myrtle (Engelstad) Kvernmoe. He was raised near Astoria, MN where he graduated from Astoria High School in 1966. He was united in marriage on November 4, 1967 to Gail (Dokken) Kvernmoe at Woodlake Lutheran Church in rural Astoria. Born of this union were two daughters, Nancy (Matt) Ash and Stephanie Kvernmoe. Paul started work in Bloomington, MN at the Bloomington Dairy and part time at the Star Tribune at the age of 17. When he was old enough to join the Teamsters union, he worked full time at the Star Tribune for 34 years while also actively farming the land and home he purchased in 1973 near Astoria, SD. He retired at the age of 55 and moved from St. Louis Park to their farm. He then purchased gravel trucks and hauled for another 20 years after retirement. Paul enjoyed playing cards, traveling to their winter home in Arizona and helping others.
He is survived by his wife Gail Kvernmoe; two daughters: Nancy (Matt) Ash and Stephanie Kvernmoe; two grandchildren: Caden (Alex) Hullin and Christopher Ash; two great-grandsons: Roland and Arthur Hullin; sister Mary Kelly, sisters in law: Ruth Dokken and Beth (Dale) Overby and numerous nephew and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Roger Dokken and several aunts and uncles.
