SIOUX FALLS (KMHL) – The National Weather Service has confirmed the severe weather that moved through earlier this week was a derecho.

The weather service says the highest recorded wind gust was near Howard, South Dakota at 99 miles per hour. There were wind gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour recorded across much of southeastern South Dakota, northwestern, Iowa and portions of southwest Minnesota.

The weather service says there were dozens of reports of downed large trees, overturned semitrucks and even damage to homes in the region affected by the storm.
