MARSHALL (KMHL) – An NAHL franchise is temporarily planning to play their games in Marshall for part of the 2020-21 season.

Yesterday, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL announced plans to temporarily relocate their team to Marshall.

“The community of Marshall is thrilled that the Fairbanks Ice Dogs chose Marshall and the Red Baron Arena & Expo as their temporary home for part of their season,” said Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes. “They saw the potential that our facilities have to host top of the line events.”

The plans call for the team to practice at and play two weekend series at Red Baron Arena, those games will happen on the weekends of November 26th and December 4th.

“Marshall hockey is excited to welcome these players and coaches into our community and into our homes,” said President of Marshall Amateur Hockey Association, Josh Johnson. “This is such a great opportunity for Marshall hockey players, for our players to see their dream, right in front of them.”

Former Marshall Tiger hockey players Mason Plante and Kaleb Welvaert are currently on the Ice Dogs roster.

Officials say Red Baron Arena & Expo is fully prepared with COVID-19 plans to ensure safety at all games and practices following CDC guidelines.

Practice for the Ice Dogs is set to begin October 23rd.
