MONTEVIDEO (LEARFIELD) – Shelly Elkington of Montevideo lost her daughter in 2015 to an opioid addiction that stemmed from being prescribed prescription pain pills for Crohn’s disease.

Today(WED) Elkington traveled to Florida and will be one of U.S. Senator and presidential hopeful Amy Klobuchar’s guests at the first round of Democratic presidential debates tonight. Elkington says she first connected with Klobuchar about eight years ago during a roundtable discussion.

“She is always, always so connected to the issue and really wants to try and help,” said Elkington. “In fact, she rolled out her big idea, her big plan… is mental health and addiction and she is really looking at holding pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in this epidemic which is what we’ve done here in Minnesota.”

She adds that Klobuchar is passionate about holding big pharma accountable.

Tonight’s debate starts at 8 p.m.
