WILLMAR — The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will begin installing LED chevron signs on April 14th along curves on several highways in southwest Minnesota. The new signs are designed to improve driver safety by increasing visibility on winding roadways.

The $244,000 project covers highways in Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, and Yellow Medicine counties. Safety Signs is the contractor for the project.

Powered by solar panels, the LED chevrons remain lit during daylight hours unless overcast conditions persist. Installation will occur at several locations including:

  • Highway 40 from 281st Avenue to 250th Street in Lac qui Parle County
  • Highway 68 from County Road 15 to County Road 14 in Yellow Medicine County
  • Highway 19 from South Dakota border to Highway 271 in Lincoln County
  • Highway 19 from County Road 114 to 280th Avenue in Lincoln County
  • Highway 30 from South Dakota border to County Road 13 in Pipestone County
  • Highway 19 from 280th Avenue to County Road 9 in Lyon County
  • Highway 19 from County Road 51 to County Road 5 in Renville County
  • Highway 19 from County Road 57 to Evergreen Avenue in Redwood County
  • Highway 68 from County Road 32 to Bunker Avenue in Redwood County
  • Highway 167 from Highway 23 to 240th Avenue in Yellow Medicine County
  • Highway 9 from County Road 148 to Highway 71 in Kandiyohi County

Crews expect to spend up to three days at each site, with the full project scheduled for completion by May 5, weather permitting.

Drivers should expect shoulder and lane closures while work is underway. Flaggers will direct traffic through work zones, and motorists are encouraged to slow down and stay alert for workers and equipment.
