Minnesota’s youth deer season runs Thursday through Sunday, giving young hunters a chance to gain experience before the regular firearms season begins.
DNR big game coordinator Paul Burr says the mid-October hunt often offers milder weather and fewer hunters in the field, creating a good learning opportunity.
“It’s a great time to get in the woods, to get youth experience in hunting, kind of carve out a little bit of time where there’s a lot less competition. You get in the woods before the firearm season starts and hopefully just have a good experience with these youth hunters to get them into hunting,” Burr said.
The Minnesota DNR says hunting licenses are free for hunters ages 10 to 13, while those ages 14 to 17 can purchase licenses at a reduced cost.
