ST. PAUL (KMHL) – The Minnesota Department of Education has released updated guidelines on allowing spectators at all sporting events, concerts, plays, competitions, performances and other events that are held indoors in school buildings.

It’s a change from previous guidance from the state high school league, which had recommended against allowing spectators for indoor events.

“I’m extremely happy that the Minnesota State High School League has made this change,” said Rep. Chris Swedzinski (R-Ghent). “I think the opportunities, especially for seniors, to invite friends and family to come and see them in their final year, will be memories that will last a lifetime.”

The new guidance doesn’t remove all restrictions. It creates an opportunity for each team to allow 2 spectators per participant.

Spectators from different households must separate by 6 feet, event spaces cannot exceed 25 percent of total capacity or 250 spectators.

The Department of Education is also advising all schools to require advanced reservations and ticketing for indoor events and not allowing walk-ups.
