Mavis Grimes, age 95, of Minneota, Minnesota, died on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Minneota Assisted Living & Home Health Care in Minneota, Minnesota. Memorial Services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall, Minnesota. A reception for attendees will follow at the Funeral Home. Private Interment will be held later in the Russell Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her celebration, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, also at the Hamilton Funeral Home. The Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall is handling the arrangements.
Mavis Eudora Scheffler was born on September 4, 1929, to Julius and Inez (Swan) Scheffler in Morton, Minnesota. Mavis attended school in Morton, graduating there from high school with the class of 1947. Mavis worked various jobs in the area before meeting Mr. Elmer Grimes at a horse show. On April 11, 1953, Mavis and Elmer were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Morton. Together they enjoyed farming and showing a pair of matched Palomino horses, raising their family, playing cards with their friends, and traveling. Mavis later continued her education and earned her certificate to be a beautician. The couple made their home in Russell before eventually moving to the farm in Balaton where Mavis fixed hair out of her home. Mavis had 2 children, John and Gail, and shared 59 years of marriage prior to Elmer’s death in 2013. In addition to being a loving farm wife, homemaker, mother, and beautician, Mavis was also active in the Red Hats and Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a long-time member of the Presbyterian churches in Russell and Marshall.
Mavis died peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025, in Minneota, Minnesota. She reached the age of 95 years, 5 months, and 7 days. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her son, John (and Karen) Grimes of Montevideo; son-in-law, Mike Miller of Nebraska; 3 grandchildren, Robert Grimes of Marietta, Jessica (and Spensor) TenEyck of Watertown, SD, Amanda (and Chris) Scott of Watertown, SD; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Grimes (in 2013); parents, Julius and Inez Scheffler; daughter, Gail Miller (in 2021); and a brother, Edward Scheffler.
