MARSHALL, MN — The Avera Marshall Thrift Store will soon be operated by the Marshall Area YMCA after nearly four decades under Avera’s management.
Avera Marshall announced it will transfer operation of the thrift store to the YMCA effective May 4, 2026. The store opened in 1987 and has provided affordable clothing and household goods while offering a place for residents to donate gently used items.
“As the health care industry becomes increasingly complex, we must focus our time, resources and energy on our core mission of delivering high-quality health care services to the communities we serve,” said Debbie Streier, Avera Marshall Regional President and CEO. “The Thrift Store has an incredible 38-year legacy, and we are grateful it will continue in the capable hands of a trusted community partner.”
Leaders with the YMCA said the change will allow the organization to expand its community outreach.
“The history and purpose of the YMCA is rooted in community outreach,” said Cindy Rosa, Marshall Area YMCA CEO. “We are honored to continue the Thrift Store’s long tradition of service. This transition allows us to extend our mission beyond our walls and further support individuals and families in our community.”
The YMCA plans to run the store with volunteers and a paid manager. Paid positions currently employed by Avera Marshall will end as part of the transition, though affected workers are being encouraged to apply for other open roles within the organization.
“We are deeply grateful to the Thrift Store team for the meaningful impact they have made over the years,” Streier said. “Their commitment to service has strengthened the spirit of generosity in Marshall.”
The thrift store will remain open at its current location during the transition, and additional details about future operations are expected from the YMCA in the coming months.
